Viagra (Sildenafil) For Treating Rare Form Of Cancers?

According to a clinical study published at ecancermedicalscience, the class of drugs that are currently being prescribed for treating male ED, has shown potential for treating some rare form of cancers. New clinical trials are to be conducted for anti-cancer drugs, and Sildenafil is one of the major drugs to be considered for the trials.

As per the latest publication, with the increasing cost of the new cancer drugs and the issue being faced by the governments across the globe, the Anti-cancer fund is looking to make use of existing drugs that are not extremely costly and are easily available at cheaper prices via discount cards such as Sildenafil discount card or sildenafil coupons.

As per the study conducted, the researchers found out that some selective phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors have potential to be used for new anti-cancer drug trials. The PDE5 inhibitors include drugs such as sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil. These drugs are known for their brand names as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra respectively.

Dr. Pan Pantziarka from the Anti-cancer fund says, “In many respects sildenafil is the ultimate repurposing success story. It was originally developed for angina, repurposed for erectile dysfunction and then again for pulmonary arterial hypertension, and now it has the potential to be repurposed again as an anti-cancer drug.”

The Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO) Project has classified many already available drugs with PDE5 inhibitors that show potential towards treating different cancer types such as glioblastoma multiforme.

“Checkpoint inhibitors have radically altered the landscape in oncology, but there remain significant challenges in terms of increasing the number and duration of responses. It would be ironic if the key to improving outcomes from some of the most expensive drugs in oncology comes from repurposing some of the cheapest non-oncology drugs,” said Dr. Pan Pantziarka.

The research explores the issue of blood-brain barrier and believe that with PDE5 inhibitors, drug delivery to brain could be improved for brain tumors. The applications could be largely helpful for patients with brain tumors. The paper contains a wide range of data both pre-clinical & clinical. It’s been summarized to aid the repurposing of PDE5 inhibitors as anticancer drugs.
