A Study on Sildenafil & Its Use for ED

Many get confused when we start mentioning Sildenafil as a go-to drug for treating Erectile Dysfunction. We reviewed a study by NCBI done on Sildenafil and its uses for ED. Please note that the findings used in the following article are not altered and utilized as pure facts from the study conducted by NCBI here.

How does sildenafil works?

It is an oral drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction and many other causes. The drug inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5, allowing corpus cavernosum penis muscle to relax and helping in getting an erection when sexually stimulated.

Sildenafil helps reduce blood pressure transiently. As the drug gets rapidly absorbed by the digestive system, the effects of the drugs could be seen within just 1 hour of administration. The drug shell life (effects) could last from 3-5 hours. Although it depends on the dosage as well. The dosage usually starts at 50mg and to be taken at least 1 hour prior to sexual activity. It is advised that the drug shouldn’t be taken more than once in a day. The maximum dosage taken at a time shouldn’t exceed more than 100 mg. For someone who needs daily assistance, should restrict to a dosage of 25mg per day. This is generally recommended for elderly people or patients with hepatic or renal impairment or taking cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A4 inhibitors like ritonavir, ketoconazole, erythromycin etc.

Study conducted

A study was conducted on over 3000 patients who were suffering from erectile dysfunction due to organic issues like diabetes, spinal cord injury or psychogenic disorder. In most of the cases, patients were given sildenafil 25 to 100mg or placebo in fixed- or titrated-dose trials. With patients receiving Sildenafil showed dose-related improvements. The effects were measured in the frequency of hardness, the time-period of the erection maintained and whether it held during a successful sexual intercourse. In the trials, it was found the dosage of 50 or 100mg were most effective.

Even in the cases of ED due to psychogenic issues, it was found that Sildenafil was more effective as compared to placebo in all tested cases. However, the effectiveness of sildenafil wasn’t dominated by the patient age (greater, lesser or equal to 65 years). The drug showed promising results for patients suffering from severe ED. Sildenafil seemed to improve the quality of sex life for the patients and their sexual partners.

Side effects

Common side effects included

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Dyspepsia
  • Nasal congestion

There were no other serious sildenafil-related adverse effects recorded during the clinical trials. Cardiovascular issues were reported in some cases, after the study period and usually in patients with other major risk factors.

CONCLUSION

Sildenafil is quite an efficient oral drug for men suffering from ED. It showed promising results during trails and men could achieve successful penetrative sexual intercourse with the help of the drug. As for the conclusion, sildenafil is still the best drug and to be used as first-line therapy for erectile dysfunction in men.
